A refurbishment to an existing 5 floor office block.
Issues we identified included the protection of the main staircase and potential constraints in occupancy numbers on the fifth floor.
Innovation Fire Engineering used CFD modelling to demonstrate that smoke curtains or lobby doors were not required to protect the main staircase. This enabled our client to achieve cost savings, design flexibility and potentially additional rentable space.
Our bespoke fire strategy also utilised some of the existing windows onto the staircase as automatic opening windows.
We specified an ‘L5’ fire engineered fire detection and alarm system, allowing a greater degree of flexibility for utilisation of the space within the building. Design flexibility was further achieved as occupancy numbers on the fifth floor were not constrained.
