Project
Re-development of the former Altrincham General Hospital site, providing integrated public health services and GP practices, library, pharmacy, cafe, ancillary basement car park and upper floor offices. The proposed 5 storey new build will retain the facade of the old hospital whilst providing modern facilities and will be located on a sloping site.

Challenges
An atrium is located in the centre of the building, linking a number of areas within the building. In addition, a bespoke evacuation strategy is needed in line with NHS requirements.

Solutions
Our fire engineering analysis enabled us to identify the most cost effective solutions for the atrium. We identified the use of fire curtains and the specifications for automatic openable vents (AOVs) in the atrium. With regards to the basement, natural smoke ventilation should be used in conjunction with mechanical or jet fans.

The evacuation policy will be phased between the floors and an L2 fire alarm system will be installed.
