The refurbishment of an existing two-storey healthcare building.
The design incorporated an open void, which could affect the means of escape from the upper floor. In addition, there were extended travel distances.
We undertook trial fire designs to resolve the issues with the means of escape past the void at first floor level. Shorter travel distances and an enhanced fire alarm system compensated for occupants having to escape near the void. With regards to the extended travel distance within two rooms, enhanced detection was provided to ensure adequate fire safety, whilst also maintaining the integrity of the design. The overall risk in our proposed design was demonstrated to be less than a code compliant design.
We added value to the project by reducing the over-specification of fire safety features. A simultaneous evacuation policy for the building was adopted to minimise disruption to patients; with the large office area being evacuated independently.
