A refurbishment of an existing two-storey building to create a Radiotherapy Centre.
The ground floor had extended travel distances from the treatment rooms and the first floor had escape routes within 4.5m of an open void above the ground floor reception and waiting area.
Innovation Fire Engineering compared the required safe egress time (RSET) for a code compliant ‘escape past a void’ scenario with that of the proposed design to demonstrate the benefits of increased detection, smaller travel distances and wider doors.
We compared the RSET for the code compliant maximum travel distance of 18m and the proposed design, showing that the increased level of detection provided adequate compensation for the slightly longer travel distance.
The team were able to maintain the architectural design by selective use of automatic smoke detection and compartment walls.
