The scheme consisted of two colleges providing a total of 1000 beds for students in the form of townhouses and cluster flats. Each college was provided with its’ own ‘heart’ space for socialising and a shared hub building.
The townhouses had a social space on the ground floor and bedrooms from first to third floor. The proposed means of escape in the townhouses did not meet the fire safety guidance and therefore required a fire engineered solution. In the ‘heart’ spaces, there were extended travel distances.
We were able to demonstrate that the design in the townhouses was acceptable through a package of bespoke fire safety measures. Fire engineering analysis was undertaken to demonstrate the acceptability of the extended travel distances within the ‘heart’ space.
