The new build student accommodation scheme consists of 8 levels providing 462 beds in the form of studio flats and cluster flats, as well as providing amenity spaces for the residents.
There were extended travel distances within the cluster flat corridors and potential issues with external escape routes and hob locations in some studios.
Innovation Fire Engineering carried out extensive CFD modelling to show that the proposed design with ventilation provided an equivalent or higher level of safety than a code complaint design. Through fire engineering calculations we were able to demonstrate the acceptability of the external escape routes within the scheme. We were also able to provide a cost effective solution to mitigate the risk of fire where hobs are located in close proximity to the escape route or flat entrance door.
