This Month’s Topic: Schools
- The client wished to have an open plan layout with voids through the floor to provide natural light to corridors on lower levels. To ease the flow of students around the building it was desirable to have several accommodation stairs. Glazing is a key feature of new school designs to provide light as well as monitoring but is costly to provide if it needs to be fire resisting.
- Cost Saving – use of property protection instead of life safety sprinklers with compartment sizes up to 2000m2, significant reduction in the number of smoke detectors used by linking the sprinkler system to the fire alarm.
- Design Flexibility – Incorporating a sprinkler system to mitigate extended travel adjacent to voids on upper levels.
- Cost Saving – compartment lines which follow the position of cross corridor doors and glazed areas reducing the number of fire doors and the amount of fire resisting glazing.
- Design Flexibility –use ordinary lifts for evacuation of disabled people.
- Cost Saving – use of accommodation stairs for evacuation therefore reducing the number and size of protected stairs and increasing the amount of usable floor area.
