The Undercroft, Corby Cube

CFD modelling of the Undercroft

Innovation Fire Engineering’s involvement occurred at the late stages of the Corby Cube project. We needed to justify the variation of a code compliant design, due to the ventilation of smoke from the scene dock area into the Undercroft, in the event of a fire. We were therefore tasked to use a fire engineering approach to design and justify a performance based smoke control system within the Undercroft area of the development.

Since the majority of the Undercroft had already been constructed when Innovation Fire Engineering became involved, we had to work to very strict criteria for the positioning of the extraction points of the smoke control systems within the Undercroft. We worked very closely with the architects and mechanical engineers to understand the limitations on any potential proposed design. Innovation Fire Engineering liaised directly with Building Control and the Fire Authority to obtain agreement on the acceptance criteria for the performance based design.

We utilised CFD modelling to design a hybrid mechanical/natural smoke control system, using permanent natural openings already within the Undercroft. We then undertook further CFD modelling to optimise the smoke control design to provide cost savings.  This resulted in us efficiently designing a cost effective smoke control system, which was acceptable to Building Control and the Fire Authority and prevented delays to the completion of construction of the Undercroft area.
